AI visibility tools: what they do, what they cost, when you need one

Every vendor page says "see your brand in ChatGPT". Here's the version with prices read off vendor pages, the free tier of the job spelled out, and a disclosed interest: we sell a tracker too — and we'll tell you when it's the wrong buy.

First: where do you stand right now?

The 5 signals every tool on this page ultimately measures, probed on your domain live.

What an AI visibility tool actually does

An AI visibility tool answers one question: when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI for a recommendation in your category, does your brand get named? Under the hood every tool does some mix of three jobs: prompt sampling (asking engines real buyer questions and logging who's mentioned), technical auditing (can AI crawlers even read your site), and reporting (turning both into something you act on).

The catch most buyers discover late: almost every tool does job one, few do job two, and almost none do job three — you get a dashboard of mentions and the "so what do I do" part is left to you.

What the market charges — verified July 2026

We read these off vendor pricing pages in July 2026 (full hands-on notes in our reviews):

TierToolsReality check
$20–79/moRankscale $20, Otterly $29, HubSpot AEO $50, Knowatoa $59, LLMrefs €79Real trackers with real limits: prompt caps, engines sold as add-ons, single-engine entry tiers
$200–500/moAthenaHQ $295, Scrunch $300, Profound $399 (Growth)Dashboards, seats, sales calls — built for teams that live in the tool
EnterpriseProfound custom, Bluefish, seoClarity, ConductorQuote-only; five-figure annual contracts

The pattern buyers complain about most (we collected the complaints): entry tiers are single-engine teasers, and real multi-engine coverage costs 3–5× the advertised price.

When you don't need a paid tool at all

Honestly: if you just want to know where you stand today, free covers it. Our 5-signal checker scores the technical layer in 20 seconds. The Answer Consistency Test asks a live engine your key prompt 5 times and shows how often you're named. The Watchdog emails you if your robots.txt or llms.txt silently changes. None of them ask for a signup.

You need a paid tracker when the question changes from "where do I stand" to "am I slipping" — that's a monthly measurement problem, not a one-shot one.

How our tracker is different (and when it isn't for you)

Our Monitor sells the deliverable, not the dashboard: monthly 5-signal re-audit + 8 category prompts sampled across three engines — Perplexity live-web asked 3 times per prompt, GPT-4o and Gemini (model-memory, labeled) — reported with a Wilson 95% confidence interval and a prioritized fix list, by email. $20/mo Lite, $199/yr full.

It is not for you if you want daily refreshes, hundreds of tracked prompts, team seats or per-keyword Google AI Overview placements — several tools in our reviews do that well at their price. We'd rather tell you that here than in a refund thread.

The honest upgrade path

Free check → one audit → monthly tracker

Plans, method and the live proof strip are on the tracker page; checkout runs on the audit page (crypto, packages — no auto-renew).

Frequently asked questions

What's the best free AI visibility tool?
For a technical baseline: a 5-signal checker that probes crawler access, robots.txt, llms.txt, schema and answer structure — ours is free with no signup. For mention checking: ask the engines your own buyer prompts several times, or use our free Consistency Test which does 5 live runs for you.
Why do AI visibility scores differ between tools?
Because engines are probabilistic and every tool samples differently: different prompts, different engines, different run counts, different days. A score without a disclosed method and sample size is a vibe. That's why our reports state the exact prompts, engines, run counts and a 95% confidence interval.
Is AI visibility tracking worth it for a small business?
If AI answers can send you customers (high-ticket local services, ecommerce categories, SaaS shortlists), yes — one recommendation is worth a real customer, and monitoring costs less than one lead in most of those niches. Start free, upgrade when the numbers matter monthly.
Do these tools track Google AI Overviews?
Some do per-keyword AIO placement tracking (SE Ranking, Advanced Web Ranking, aioverviewtracker-style specialists). We audit AIO readiness — the signals Google says gate inclusion — and sample answer engines directly; the distinction is spelled out on our AI Overview page.
Dashboard or report — which should I buy?
Buy a dashboard if someone on your team will log in weekly and act on it. Buy a report if you want the interpretation done for you. Most small teams buy dashboards, stop logging in by month two, and keep paying — that's the failure mode our report format exists to avoid.

Start with a number, not a subscription

The free 5-signal check gives you a baseline in 20 seconds. If you want it re-run monthly with sampled AI answers and a fix list in your inbox, that's the tracker — from $20/mo.
