AI Share of Voice: The Formula and Why It Matters

AI share of voice is the share of AI answers that name your brand. You measure it against tracked rivals. The formula is your mentions over all tracked mentions, times 100. It is the core GEO metric.

AI share of voice

AI share of voice is the share of AI answers that name your brand. You measure it against the rivals you track. The formula is plain. It is your mentions divided by all tracked mentions, times 100. It is the core GEO metric. Tools sample it across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.

How the score is measured

You measure the score by prompt sampling, not by rankings. A tool sends a fixed set of category prompts to each engine. It runs them on a set measurement cadence, often daily, because the same prompt returns a fresh answer each run. Then it counts your brand mentions in the text. That prompt set defines your answer engine coverage.

Passionfruit's 2026 roundup of AI-visibility tools splits the reading into four signals. Mention frequency counts how often an engine names you. Citation tracking logs which URLs it cites. Sentiment in AI answers reads how you are described. Share of voice is the comparative one. It is your mentions over the whole tracked field. AI SOV is that fourth signal. It is brand monitoring pointed at generated answers. Most AI search analytics tools compute some version of it, from Otterly at about $29 a month to Profound at about $499.

Classic SEO share of voice counts ranking presence across a keyword set. AI SOV counts citation presence inside a generated answer. One is tied to rank and clicks. The other often carries no link at all.

Worked example

The numbers below are illustrative. This is a demo of the math, not a case study.

Sample 50 category prompts across four [answer engines](/answer-engine-optimization/). An engine names your brand 30 times. Four tracked rivals are named 90 times between them. The field totals 120 mentions. Your score is 30 ÷ 120, or 25%.

A 25% score means one in four category mentions is yours. Run the same prompt set next quarter. A rise to 32% is a seven-point gain you can put on a slide. Read it next to two more visibility metrics. One is the AI visibility score, or how often you appear at all. The other is mention position, or where in the answer you land. Together they cover most of the picture.

Your brand mentions divided by all tracked mentions, times 100. Thirty of 120 mentions is a 25 percent AI share of voice

Why it matters: the budget-defense metric

The score answers the hardest question a GEO channel faces. It returns citations, not clicks. So how do you prove it worked?

How do you explain the value when you can't show concrete traffic numbers or traditional ROI metrics? — r/AISEOforBeginners, December 2025

AI SOV is the answer. It turns "we showed up in ChatGPT" into one percentage. You benchmark it against named rivals and trend it on a fixed cadence. That is competitive benchmarking a CMO can read on a retainer report. It is the number that survives a zero-click channel. The traffic may be zero. The signal is not.

The name is a plain choice, and it matters. Vendors coin their own labels. Otterly promotes GSVO for the same ground. Profound ships it as a dashboard tab it calls "Share of Voice." One public formula beats a coinage that only runs inside one tool. That is why this glossary uses the standard term. See GSVO for the vendor version.
